Trim Being Spray Painted

Spray painting interior trim on this job was viable because the customer was replacing the floor.

Not having to tape and paper the floor on this paint project before spray painting the wood made the job affordable and efficient.
Our painters did have to tape and paper the glass before spray painting windows. Before spray painting doors all doorknobs and hinges were removed. All baseboards were caulked where cracked and holes filled before they were spray painted. Finally rooms where tiles and cabinets were taped and papered before spray painting the adjoining doorframe.
Spray painting interior trim has certain advantages over using a paint brush and roller. The coverage of the paint is much better and there are no brush marks. Our painters did go through a lot more paint then if we brushed and rolled.
When determining whether you should pick spray painting interior trim over brushing and rolling the paint on, figure out how long it would take the painter to mask off the room and remove the furniture first as spray painting isn’t always the best solution for all paint projects.
In this case the customer liked the speed and finish of the wood that was sprayed.
Our painters used a Graco Pro Shot fine finish sprayer for this paint job. The paint for the trim was Sico Paint waterborne alkyd, and it sprayed beautifully.

Painting with red paint has caused many painters and homeowners who are handy with a paint brush unnecessary stress due to poor coverage.

If you plan on painting with red paint and have your paint colour picked a little paint preparation can avoid having to paint up to five coats!
First of all if your existing wall is white you should have your painters prime it grey in the approximate shade of the red paint they will be applying. This will limit the amount of coats of red to three maximum.
Second of all have your painter use the absolute top of the line paint (they should be anyway). We recommend Benjamin Moore Aura Matte or Eggshell finish for the best coverage on walls and Satin finish or Semi gloss finish for painting trim. This should limit the amount of coats to one coat of grey primer and two coats of red paint.
If the surface you are painting is green in the approximate same darkness as the red paint you will be painting then you should get your painter to do a coverage test on the surface with the red paint and then assess the coverage. Green is reds complimentary colour and when two complimentary colours are mixed they make a neutral colour. This means that when you are painting over one complimentary colour with another complimentary colour the coverage is usually fantastic. The shade or darkness of the paint colours must be the same as one another for this painting trick to work.
When we were painting with red paint on the wainscoting in the picture above we got lucky. The existing colour was a deep purple and the quality of the paint we used did the coverage work for us.

When painting walls two tone in colour you have a couple of options.

The first option is to use the existing natural break off points in the wall such as chair rails and moldings.
The second option is to tape lines in the middle of the drywall before painting the wall in two tone.
Our painters went with the first option and added a feature wall in the darker paint colour.
The colour pallet of this room is Marscapone by Benjamin Moore and Jet Blue also by Benjamin Moore.
The ceiling and crowns are painted in Marscapone in a flat sheen and the chair rail, moldings and upper wall above the rail is painted in Marscapone in an eggshell finish.
Our painters painted the drywall below the chair rail, the baseboards and the one feature wall above the chair rail in Jet Blue in an eggshell finish.
Since the baseboards were painted in an eggshell sheen our painters used Benjamin Moore Aura to up the durability factor.
As a final touch we painted the fireplace and windows in Benjamin Moore Advance in a pearl finish with the Marscapone colour.
This room was challenging to paint because of the dark colour on cream colour but was well worth the results for the customers and our painters alike.

When looking for a gender neutral paint for your babies room the customer has a lot of options.

This purple paint in the picture above is in a girls room but as you can see it can easily be dressed up for a boys room.
Blue is traditionally a colour for a boys room but Court-Hampton Painting has been asked for a light blue gender neutral paint in girls rooms to mimic the sky in the past.
Earthy greens are popular as gender neutral paint colours as are pastel greens as you can see in the picture below.

This green paint is so vibrant but can still suit a boys or girls nursery. Gender neutral paint definitely doesn’t mean washed out colours or off white for your child’s room. The nursery is one room in your house where you can have a lot of fun with paint colour and vibrant hues while still staying in the realm of gender neutral paint colours.

Most homeowners are weary of painting high stairwells because of the ladder work involved and are uncomfortable working with heights.

This stairwell was challenging because it is multilevel and at some points over 18 feet high. Our painters used four different kinds of ladders to reach all the ceilings and walls and a eighteen foot pole to roll them.

When hiring a painting contractor in Toronto or anywhere else there are some factors the customer should take into account.

The first factor (and most important) is the quality of work the painting contractor provides. Is the quality a consistent high quality finish that has been properly prepared to ensure durability for years to come? That is the customers main goal when looking for a painter.

Painting Wrought Iron Fence

Painting wrought iron is not a difficult process, but it usually is intricate.
Your painter should first scrape off any rust on the fence with a wire brush followed by sanding the entire surface.
Before painting wrought iron fencing the painter should spot prime the rusted areas with a rust primer.
The fence should be painted with two coats of rust paint.
There are a lot of rust paints on the market and some are switching from oil rust paint to water borne rust paint.

Tremclad has been around forever and has proven itself time and time again.
The water based rust paint will have to prove itself as it is relatively new, but once it does we have no problem using that paint.

When painting ceilings your painter should first cover furniture and anything else you don’t want paint on.

Before we painted this ceiling we actually draped plastic from ceiling to floor around the entire room being painted. Next your painter should repair any water damage in the drywall and prime as necessary. Our painters had to use a stain sealing primer on this paint job to cover up champagne marks from the customers new years party, and some water stains.
Once that is done your painter should pole sand the surface and apply two coats of paint. This ceiling paint was fantastic with minimal splatter. It is from Benjamin Moore and has a super flat finish and is easy to use. In our painters experience it is wise to use actual ceiling paint when painting ceilings as they have a flatter sheen than other paints. We tend to stay away from ceiling paints with pink dye in them so the painter can see what part of the ceiling he has already painted. This pink dye that dries white when the ceiling is done can sometimes come back temporarily if steam or high humidity is present in the freshly painted room. Zero voc paint has come a long way in recent years turning us into zero voc painters.

When zero voc paint first came along the tint base was zero voc (volatile organic compounds which causes toxic paint fumes) but the tint still had the vocs. We found that very misleading to our customer base because who doesn’t tint their paint to add colour to a room!
Also in the infancy of zero voc paint the durability of the paint was suspect. Our question to paint customers was “what’s more eco friendly, painting your house once every ten years or once every year due to poor paint durability? ”
All that has changed as paint manufacturers such as Benjamin Moore and most recently Sherwin Williams has made the actual tint zero voc as well as the base of the paint. The durability of these eco paints has also improved dramatically, in some cases surpassing paint with vocs.
We ultimately pick the best paint suited to the customers substrate ( zero voc paints aren’t usually suited for floors for example). The affect of the green building materials movement has been positive for the customer and the painter alike because even if a zero voc paint isn’t suited to your paint job, a low voc paint will more than do the job for paint durability. This means low to no off gassing for the home owner and less direct health issues for the painter.
