High gloss paint can be challenging to

work with be cause it is a thin paint by nature. That means coverage can be poor and drips and runs can happen frequently if you are painting walls or trim with a lot of paint to compensate for coverage.
High gloss paint can be a beautiful glass like finish however and when our painters are painting cabinets or walls they apply two thin coats of paint for a mirror finish.

Our painters have been painting mildewed bathrooms in Toronto where the cause of the mildew is steam and

poor ventalation.
In some cases the drywall must be removed and replaced where the mildew is starting to turn to mould (see picture below).

Our painters must first wash the walls and ceiling to be painted in trisodium phosphate otherwise known as TSP, then remove remaining mildew and cut out damaged drywall where needed.
After plastering our painters prime the entire bathroom before painting with a mildew resistant paint on the ceiling, walls and trim.

Older homes with dark stained wood and plaster walls need a certain level of care and preparation before painting

the ceilings or walls.
The painter must plaster using sheetrock and not drywall compound. If the wall or ceiling is stucco the sheetrock patches should be wiped at the edges and in the middle with a wet rag so that the patch will resemble the pattern in the current stucco wall. Sanding the patches does not achieve this look.
The painters must also drape plastic from the crown to the floor to protect the dark stained wood that is so common in older Toronto homes before painting the ceilings. Paint rollers splatter paint like a mist when rolling ceilings and will get paint all over that beautiful wood work. Some painters say that if you roll slow the paint won’t splatter, we know that to be nonsense and that your paint will just splatter slowly!
In addition the painters should tape the tops of the baseboards after they are brushed in but before rolling the walls with the paint to protect them.

As these ecopaint products develop they just keep getting better and better. This paint has great flow and is nice to work with. The fact it sticks to an oil based substrate with a light sanding in this case saves alot of paint preparation. With low VOC and water clean up.

It’s interesting how children perceive the colour of a painted room, or any object.

Babies when first born perceive mostly primary colours or colours with alot of chromaticness (brightness or saturation of the hue). This fades as the child grows. My neice recently asked me to paint her room the colour of the sky (she’s eight years old), to which my reply was which one? She chose a light blue, still quite chromatic but with about 65% whiteness in it. Her colour palette is maturing as she is. Our painters got to work immediately under her strict instruction and wound up painting her bed as well.

There are alot of self priming paints on the market today. However there are different primers for different purposes, some offer adhesion, some stain blocking, some coverage. The self priming paints don’t usually get to specific on these points so if you’re going to paint over oil paint with one of these products do a test first. Usually if the surface is slick you’ll need a good adhesion primer before painting, the above video was tested on an oil based eggshell finish (not that slick), but after sanding the surface it stuck very well.

Notice that if you use the same nuance in your colours ( the same blackness, saturation, and chromaticness, or as they say in North America the same shade) you can put hues right beside each other without experiencing colour clash.
